    i see no reason why you cant use ipods usb charger, USB specification for voltage is standard on all usb device (5 VDC) just use the garmin supplied usb cable.

      I see. It's my friend's 255W. I don't think he has a Garmin USB cable. Won't a generic cable do?

        Not all chargers with porper rating can sync and charge at the same time, meaning you can use the gps while on the charging state.

        Almost all can't sync and charge, they only charge.

            I think that it's the cable that determines whether the unit can be charged only, or sync/charged. It has something to do with the number of pins of the USB plug. The was the case for an old Sandisk Sansa mp3 player I had. I needed a USB cable that could sync and charge at the same time. The people in CD-R King said that what I was looking for was an 8-pin USB plug (if I remember correctly), which they luckily had in stock.
